Paper Piecing

Interested in learning Paper Piecing?  Here’s a sample pattern provided by the famous Carol Doak, master paper piecer.  Choose your own colors to make this stunning flower/star pattern.

Some people love paper piecing and this simple pattern will give you an opportunity to give it a try.  By the end of class you will have a 4 ½” unfinished block (picture below) if time allows, you may make three additional copies and pair them together to make an 8 ½” unfinished block (picture below).

Prep work prior to class:
Press fabric with sizing spray, the firmer the fabric the easier it is to cut and sew
Label 1: Cut 4 – 2” x 4 ½” Fuchsia (center of flower)
Label 2 and 3: Cut 8 – 1 ¾” x 3 ½” (Light purple/pink on outside of flower tip)
Label 4: Cut 4 – 2” x 4 ½” Check (blue/pink/purple/green/black boxed fabric, upper petal of flower)
Label 5: Cut 4 – 2” x 5 ½” Teal (blue with black, lower petal of flower)
Label 6 and 7: Cut 8 – 2 ½” x 5” Light (purple/pink on outside of flower)

What you will need:
• 4 fat quarters
• 45 mm rotary cutter with fresh blade
• Self-healing cutting mat (size 1” x 11” preferred) or dual pressing/cutting mat
• 4” and 8” square rulers
• Add-a-quarter ruler
• Stiff post card or advertisement card (use the card included with the “Add-a-quarter” ruler)
• Foundation paper for either a LaserJet printer or an inkjet printer (depends which printer you have) NOTE: the pattern will be supplied in class
• Sewing machine, all accessories, and book (seam ripper, curved snips)
• Size 90/14 Universal sewing needle
• Flat headed pin
• Neutral thread 50/2 weight
• Styrofoam organizing tray (can get them from the grocery store)
• Sticky notes (used to number each fabric piece, then place on tray in number order)
• Open toe sewing foot is preferred or “stitch-in-the-ditch”
• Small bendable light source next to your machine
• Optional items:
o Small iron
o Small pressing table (will be used for cutting and pressing)
o Small pressing mat (sits alongside small cutting mat)
